Mobile Deployment Database: Help & Guide

| Laura Sear

Overview

This database visualizes mobile deployment using data sourced from Teragence, covering mobile network operators across countries, bands, and technologies. The filters at the top of each page can be use to narrow results by Country, Operator, Band, Technology and Urban/non-urban areas to explore deployment patterns in detail.

Key terminology

  • Deployment: the number of mobile transceivers in a band. Can relate to total national deployment or an operator’s total deployments
  • Radios: individual radio units counted within the underlying Teragence dataset; see the “Radios definition” link for full methodology
  • Sectors count / Sector percent: underlying data fields representing the count and percentage share of network sectors used to calculate deployment metrics

Where to Find More Information

  • Click “Full size” on any chart to open an enlarged, standalone view. You will be redirected to one of the pages under the Data-Breakdown
  • Click “More details” to drill into the underlying breakdown for that chart

Data-Breakdown

The following pages show more detail on charts displayed in the Dashboards

  • Single country: operator deployments
  • Single country: urban/non urban deployment by operator
  • All countries: urban/non urban deployment by operator
  • Single band: deployment by country
  • Single band: deployment by operator
  • All bands: deployment in a single country
  • All bands: deployment by technology and area
  • Technology deployment by operator
  • Technology deployment: all countries
  • Maps Technology Deployment
  • Maps Bands Deployment

Data Freshness

The overview page displays a “Data Last Updated” timestamp; note that some individual chart components may refresh on a different schedule.

Country Dashboard

How to Use the Filters

  • Country filter: selects the market shown in the dashboard. Changing the country updates all charts and the Total deployments figure to reflect radio deployments observed in that country.
  • Band filter: narrows the two band-deployment charts to the selected frequency band or bands. It updates Band deployment as a share of national total and Operator band deployment as a share of its total deployment to show how the chosen band is used within the selected country and by its operators.
  • How the filters work together: select a country first, then use the band filter to examine the role of a particular band in that market. The Technology mix and Urban and non-urban deployments by operator charts remain country-level measures and are not affected by band choice.

Example: Select United Kingdom in the Country filter to view the country’s overall deployment profile. The dashboard will show the share of all UK radio deployments associated with each band and how VodafoneThree, O2 and EE use those bands within their own estates. Then select 800 MHz in the Band filter to focus the two band-deployment charts on that frequency. The Technology mix and Urban and non-urban deployments by operator charts remain unchanged, as they cover all bands in the selected country.

Chart Description

Urban and non-urban deployments by operator: shows how each operator splits its radio deployments between urban and non-urban areas, regardless of band or technology

Band deployment as a share of national total: shows the proportion of all radio deployments in a country attributable to each spectrum band, across every operator

Operator band deployment as a share of its total deployment: shows each operator’s individual spectrum band mix as a percentage of its own total deployments

Technology mix: shows the proportion of radios in a country using each technology (4G, 5G NSA, 5G SA), regardless of band or operator

Bands Dashboard

How to use the filters

  • Band filter: selects the frequency band shown throughout the dashboard, such as 800 MHz. Changing the band updates the technology mix, map, and country comparison chart to use only deployments observed on that band. It also refreshes related speed and operator charts elsewhere on the page to reflect the selected band.
  • Country filter: restricts the dashboard to one or more selected countries. The technology mix then represents the selected country or combined selected countries; the map and the deployment-share chart show only those markets, while performance results and counts are recalculated from observations in the chosen geography.
  • Using both filters: selecting a band and a country answers a focused question: within this country, how extensively is this band deployed and which technologies use it.

Example: selecting 800 MHz and the Netherlands would display the Netherlands’ 800 MHz deployment share and the technology mix of radios using that band there.

Chart Description

Technology mix: shows the share of radios using the selected band by network technology, including 4G, 5G NSA and 5G SA.

Deployments in selected band: the map shows where the selected band has been observed and its share of total radio deployments in each country.

Deployment of selected band as % of all national deployments: compares the selected band’s share of total deployments across countries. A higher percentage means the band forms a larger part of that country’s observed mobile radio estate.

Technology dashboard

How to use the filters

  • Technology filter: selects the network technology shown in the dashboard, such as 4G, 5G NSA, or 5G SA. Changing it updates the charts that break down band use and deployment by technology.
  • Country filter: limits the view to one or more countries. This changes the country-based comparison chart and the national deployment share chart so they only reflect the selected geography.
  • Area filter: narrows the data to a specific area type, such as urban or non-urban, so the charts recalculate based on that subset of deployments.

Example: if you select 5G SA, United Kingdom, and urban, the dashboard will show how 5G SA is deployed in urban UK areas and how that selection affects the band and deployment breakdowns.

Chart Description

Deployment of radios by mobile technology in selected countries: compares deployment levels across countries and is not affected by the technology filter.

Band deployments in selected technology: shows how the chosen technology is distributed across spectrum bands, highlighting which bands account for the largest share of deployments.

Technology mix filtered by country and/or area type: shows the split of deployments across 4G, 5G NSA, and 5G SA for the current country and area selection.

Technology deployment as a percentage of all national deployment: shows how much of a country’s total deployment base is represented by the selected technology.
