5G Advanced

5G-Advanced (5G-A/5.5G) is the mid-point of the 5G cycle, starting with 3GPP Release 18 and paving the way for 6G. It boosts performance, IoT, NTN, positioning and energy efficiency across low-, mid- and high-band spectrum, but wider deployment depends on 5G SA cores and device support maturing over the next few years. This research note consists of a general overview and a regional overview as well as a deployment tracker.

The tracker is based on public announcements by mobile network operators or their technology ecosystem partners and press reports covering 5G-A memoranda of understanding (MoUs), network equipment and software agreements, proofs of concept (POCs), tests, trials, pilots, deployments and service launches.
6G Dossier

The ITU has now published a framework for IMT-2030, setting key parameters for much of the research into 6G. 6G IMT-2030 networks will use multiple frequency bands—existing terrestrial bands, repurposed bands, and spectrum in new bands. There’s particular interest in the 7—24 GHz range, particularly 7—15 GHz. Spectrum for satellites and other non-terrestrial networks will play a significant part in 6G. Many big countries are investing heavily in 6G R&D programmes.
