Private networks benchmark updated for 2024

In July 2023, PolicyTracker published a second version of our benchmark summarising how spectrum was being used for private networks. We have now updated that benchmark to reflect all that has happened since then.

| Jonathan Watson

Our research this year has found that momentum in the assignment of spectrum for private networks is continuing to build.

There are now 53 nations in all regions of the world actively planning and implementing policies for localised spectrum use across an array of spectrum bands, up from 40 countries in July 2023.

Thirty-three of these (up from 23 in 2023) have assigned spectrum for private network use; 15 of them are also planning further spectrum set-asides for localised use.

Private spectrum: current and planned assignments

Two new nations that have assigned spectrum—Israel and Switzerland—are included in the benchmark for the first time.

Fourteen of the 53 nations plan to assign spectrum and have identified spectrum targets for local use.

Five new nations who are planning assignments—Bulgaria, Ireland, Lithuania, Oman and Thailand—have also been included in the benchmark for the first time.

The other new countries included are Mexico, Namibia, Qatar, Somalia, Sri Lanka and the UAE. All six are consulting on policy plans with specific spectrum resources yet to be identified.
