Data Explorer – Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

| Richard Haas
Where does the Spectrum Data Explorer source its data?

Primary spectrum assignment and pricing data come from the PolicyTracker Spectrum Database (PSD). Supplementary information, such as population, is derived from recognized international bodies like the World Bank. View our Sourcing page for more information.

How do page-specific filters work?

Each Explorer page applies its own set of filters to show only relevant records. Entries that do not meet a page’s criteria are automatically hidden.

Which types of licences are included?

We include national spectrum licences that cover a substantial portion of a country. These are most often assigned to mobile network operators (MNOs). Countries where licences are regionalised (such as the US, and India) are also included, but these are first normalised by population so that they are comparable.

We do not include private network licence or satellite licences. Additionally, there are some specific rules on what kind of licences we show depending on which page you are viewing (e.g. the Band Pricing page only includes licences where prices are known). See the methodology page for more information on each page.

Are prices adjusted for inflation or present value?

No. All amounts are shown in USD using the exchange rate at the time of the award. Historical inflation adjustments are not applied.

Some countries or bands do not show any data. Why?

Data may not exist in the PSD for that region or period. If you believe data is missing for a key market or band, let us know. Contact us at database@policytracker.com.

How can I report missing or inaccurate data?

Email us at database@policytracker.com with the country, band, and issue details so we can investigate and update the database.

Can I suggest adding a new country or spectrum band?

Absolutely. We welcome recommendations on additional geographies, bands, or data fields to include. Email your suggestions to database@policytracker.com.

What should I do if I encounter an error?

Try clearing your browser cache and reloading. Ensure your internet connection is stable. If the error persists, please contact us at database@policytracker.com.

I’d like new features or custom analysis. How can I ask?

We always welcome suggestions on how we can make the Data Explorer better. Don’t hesitate to reach out to database@policytracker.com and tell us your thoughts. We also offer bespoke research services.

Where can I find more detailed or raw data?

Visit the full PolicyTracker Spectrum Database product for comprehensive licence records, including start/end dates, detailed pricing breakdowns, and inflation-adjusted analyses. This is available as a Google Sheet and Excel file.
