Satellite D2D-IMT benchmark updated
Our satellite-IMT benchmark was first published in March 2025, but so much has been going on in the last six months or so that we have decided to update it.
As we reported yesterday, for example, Ofcom has now moved on to the next stage of developing a regulatory framework for satellite direct-to-device (D2D) services in the UK.
It hopes to introduce the new framework in early 2026. The regulator claims its plan will make the UK the “first country in Europe” to authorise D2D for use in regular mobile bands via standard smartphones.
In Europe, the Radio Spectrum Policy GroupRSPG stands for the Radio Spectrum Policy … (RSPG) issued an “Opinion” in June calling on the European Commission (EC) to mandate CEPTCEPT stands for the European Conference of… to develop harmonised technical conditions for D2D-IMT satellite operations in the harmonised mobile bands. The RSPG is a high-level advisory group of governmental experts that advises the EC on spectrum policy.
Across the Atlantic, Canada’s Supplemental Mobile Coverage by Satellite (SMCS) rules have now entered into force. The rules follow the country’s general mobile satellite service framework, which requires separate authorisations for the satellite system and Earth stations (in this case, mobile handsets).
Elsewhere, Tanzania has become the first country in Africa to introduce measures for D2D satellite services, publishing its framework in July. The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority is treating its framework as transitional, pending the outcome of WRC-27 Agenda Item 1.13.
The updated benchmark is now available to Spectrum Research Service subscribers.
