Spectrum bands updated for 2024

The band profiles in the Spectrum Research Service show increased interest in licence renewal, 6 GHz and 26 GHz.

The repurposing and re-tendering of legacy bands is becoming more apparent with awards and consultations taking place in a number of countries. For example, a large number of licences in the 2.1 GHz band are expiring in the next few years, so further regulatory activity regarding this band is expected.

Number of national licences issued globally since 1999

There has been a minor increase in the number of 3.3—3.8 GHz licences, though most of the current licences were awarded in 2021.

Mobile assignments in 4.4—4.9 GHz are are slowing becoming established and this range now appears in our Current 4G and 5G bands section.

New band profiles have been introduced this year to include the new frequencies being studied for possible IMT identification following WRC-23. The mobile industry’s horizons are expanding to consider a wider range of upper midband and lower high band frequencies, such as 6 GHz.

A number of mmWave auctions are expected to take place in the short-term to mid-term, especially of the 26 GHz band.

The bands profiles are available to Spectrum Research Service subscribers.
