Understanding the UK’s D2D decision

What is the context for Ofcom's recently announced proposal to introduce a regulatory framework for satellite direct-to-device operations?

| Jonathan Watson

If you enjoyed our story on Friday on UK regulator Ofcom’s plan to develop rules for satellite D2D operators—and I can think of no reason why you wouldn’t have—then this might be a good time to have a(nother?) look at our satellite D2D market overview.

That research note provides the background for Ofcom’s decision. It explores the approaches of eight key players in the industry, focusing on their spectrum strategies and regulatory challenges.

The note was published in September. The key development we have reported on since then is the publication by Australia’s regulator of guidance confirming that mobile operators in the country can use their spectrum together with a satellite operator to provide D2D.

(Leaving aside the fact that the backer of one of the key players in the nascent satellite D2D sector appears to have become arguably the second most powerful person in the world.)

Our overview of the satellite D2D market is now available to Spectrum Research Service subscribers. The topic also crops up in our 6G dossier and various sections of our spectrum handbook.
