Podcast: The future of PMSE spectrum

Shure's Head of Spectrum and Regulations for the Middle East and Africa, Nada Abdelhafez, speaks to PolicyTracker about PMSE spectrum in the latest episode of the Spectrum Policy Podcast.

Radio mics, in-ear monitors and wireless communications come under the umbrella term of programme-making and special events (PMSE—specifically audio PMSE to differentiate it from video applications such as wireless cameras) and play a crucial role in TV programmes, particularly large-scale productions.

The PMSE industry, which uses the UHF bands, was relieved by the outcome of WRC-23. The conference ensured the protection of sub-1 GHz bands for PMSE users, which audio and production companies such as Shure believe is crucial to keep their equipment functioning.

Abdelhafez discusses the impact of the conference on the industry, possible new bands for PMSE and the cooperation and future possibilities between PMSE and DECT, the wireless technology often used for landline phones.
